My pet dog Bruno is suffering from Lymphoma (blood cancer). While he is undergoing treatment and is responding well, I want to be mentally prepared if I have to take a tough decision. At the moment I am conflicted not from what's best for him point of view but what would be best for me, should I have to take the decision to put him down.

Practice Upekkha. Contemplate on the nature of Samsara. Killing it will not save it from Lymphoma or any other sickness. Getting sick and experiencing pain is a part of life and as long as you have not eradicated the cause of birth, you are likely to keep getting sick again and again.

Look after the dog well and whenever you feel sad, practice Upekka or mindfulness. Killing breaks the first precept.
