Greetings! I have a sort of linguistic question. English is very useful for labeling 'cause we can just add "ing" to any noun or verb and get the label for the process. But as for Russian which is my native language, you can't do it that simple. We can rather use nouns like, for example, "the rise of the abdomen, or the fall", or use verbs but always attributed to the object like the abdomen (though the noun itself we can skip) IS rising, (the hand) IS lifting. So if there are only two options what is better, impersonal nouns or verbs linked to the subjects?

And the second part, the labels for rising and falling are quite long, can we use exhale/inhale or up/down instead of them? Won't it be overconceptualised?

There are no nouns in this method of meditation because there are no entities in ultimate reality. It's either an action or a characteristic. So always use verbs, adjectives or adverbs to note. There is a Russian version of the booklet here: https://www.sirimangalo.org/text/how-to-meditate/

Thank you for the answer. I was inclined towards the verbs. But there's one more thing with verbs I'd like to ask. When we speak for example about bending the arm, what is better to say
(arm) IS BENDING or (i) AM BENDING (the arm), in Russian they are two different forms of the verb. In the instruction you sent it is said that when we speak about thinking, one need to label AM THINKING, but when we speak about rising/falling we label IS RISING. Am I right that it is better to avoid personalisation with I? As I remember Mahasi Saydaw taught not to link labeling with I? Translator may have missed that point

There is neither an 'I' nor an 'arm'. It's just bending. Languages can be limiting sometimes since they are mostly evolved based on taking entities for granted. Also make sure that you are paying attention to the action, not the label.
