I found a copy of the heart suttra and it says that it's "a core Buddhist teaching." Is this suttra part of Thervada or some other branch of Buddhism? Is there any reason it may be incompatible with Theravada teachings?

It's part of the Mahayana tradition.

Does that make it incompatible or contradictory to theravada teachings in some way? If so, how?
