Do monks believe in western medicine?

Do monks, aside from first aid, believe in and seek treatment from western medicine for chronic snd degenerative illnesses?

If medical attention is sought and medical remedies are practiced, is there a guideline as to what therapeutic method is to be followed and which precepts can be suspended in order to receive proper treatment? Or are monks able to act as their own physician on their own behalf, and decide on their own treatment?

Monks can generally accept any form of medication as long as it doesn't involve taking intoxicants.
