The Buddha taught two categories of meditation: Samatha and Vipassana. Noting falls mainly in the Vipassana category.

Only Vipassana practiced according to the Satipatthana Sutta can lead to permanent freedom from suffering. Samatha does not, on its own, lead to permanent freedom from suffering.
