I have only read a few of the suttas in the tapitika, but I keep seeing the focus on developing the jhanas. From what I understood, samatha meditation focuses on the jhanas. Am I understanding something wrongly?

The Yugananda Sutta lists four techniques of practicing meditation that lead to enlightenment.

  1. Vipassana preceded by Samatha
  2. Samatha preceded by Vipassana
  3. Vipassana in tandem with Samatha
  4. Settling the mind with regards to the Dhammas

Different meditation teachers may teach one or more of these techniques to their students.
